How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Really Take?

A typical bathroom renovation takes around one to three weeks of work on site, but the whole journey from first design visit to finished room is usually six to ten weeks.

The fitting itself is only part of the story. Before anyone lifts a tile, there's the design, the survey, the quote and the wait for your products to arrive. Knowing how those stages fit together is the easiest way to avoid a bathroom that's still half-finished when the family arrives for Christmas.

Here's what happens at each stage, roughly how long it takes, and what you can do to keep things moving.

Stage 1: The Design Visit (1–2 hours)

Everything starts with deciding what you actually want. A showroom visit lets you see products at full size, compare finishes in real light and talk through your layout with someone who designs bathrooms every day.

At Bathrooms Plus, you can also see your new bathroom in our 4D VR headset before you commit, so you'll know how the space will feel, not just how it looks on paper.

To save time: bring your room measurements, a few photos of the current bathroom (including where the pipes and window are) and any pictures of bathrooms you like.

Stage 2: Survey and Quote (1–2 weeks)

Once the design is taking shape, the room needs to be measured and checked properly. A survey picks up the details that affect cost and timing: where the waste pipe runs, the condition of the floor, the state of the walls and whether the existing plumbing can supply the shower you've chosen.

You'll then receive a quote. Take time to read it, ask questions and make changes now. Changing your mind before ordering is free; changing it after the fitters have started rarely is.

Stage 3: Ordering Products (2–6 weeks)

This is the stage most people underestimate. Many products are in stock, but some furniture colours, made-to-measure shower screens, special tiles and designer radiators can take several weeks to arrive.

Your installation date is usually set once everything is confirmed, because fitters can't finish a room with a missing vanity unit or shower door.

Stage 4: Strip-Out (1–2 days)

On day one, the old bathroom comes out: suite, tiles, flooring and sometimes plasterboard. This is the noisiest and dustiest part of the job.

It's also when surprises appear. Rotten floorboards, old pipework or a damp patch behind the bath are common in older Scottish tenements and 1930s houses. A good fitter will flag anything that needs fixing before it's covered up again.

Stage 5: First-Fix Plumbing and Electrics (1–3 days)

Pipes are moved or extended to suit the new layout, and any wiring for shower pumps, electric showers, LED mirrors, extractor fans or underfloor heating goes in while the walls are open.

Moving a toilet, shower or bath to a new position takes longer than keeping things where they are, mainly because waste pipes need a proper fall.

Stage 6: Walls, Floors and Tiling (3–6 days)

Walls are boarded, tanked (waterproofed) in wet areas and prepared for tiles or panels. Then the tiling begins.

Tiling is where time varies most. Large-format tiles, intricate patterns and fully tiled rooms take longer than half-height tiling or wall panels. Adhesive and grout also need time to cure before the room can be used.

Faster alternative: waterproof wall panels go up much more quickly than tiles and leave no grout lines to clean, so they can shave days off a fit.

Stage 7: Second Fix and Finishing (2–4 days)

The new suite, furniture, taps, shower, screen, mirror and radiator are fitted and connected. Silicone is applied, everything is tested and the room is cleaned.

Then comes the best part: your first shower.

What Can Slow a Bathroom Renovation Down?

The biggest delays usually come from decisions made late, products arriving late or problems hidden under the old bathroom.

The most common hold-ups are:

  • Changing the design after products have been ordered
  • Long lead times on made-to-measure or special-order items
  • Rotten floors, old lead or iron pipework, or damp walls found during strip-out
  • Moving the toilet or shower to a new position
  • Waiting for plaster, screed or adhesive to dry
  • Access problems in tenement flats, such as shared stairs and parking

Can I Use My Bathroom During the Renovation?

Usually not, at least for most of the job. If it's your only bathroom, ask whether the toilet can be reconnected at the end of each day for as long as possible. Many households plan to shower at the gym, with family or at work for a week or two.

Want a New Bathroom Before Christmas? Book Now

If you'd like to be enjoying a new bathroom over the festive season, the design visit needs to happen now, not in December. Working back from Christmas, allow a few weeks for the quote and ordering and one to three weeks for fitting.

Installation slots before the holidays fill quickly, so the earlier you start, the more choice you'll have.

If Christmas is too tight, January is a great time to plan instead. Visit us before the new year and you'll be first in the queue for spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fit a new bathroom suite?
A straight swap of toilet, basin and bath, with no new tiling, can often be done in three to five working days.

How long does tiling a bathroom take?
Typically three to six days, depending on the size of the room, the tile format and whether the walls need preparing first.

How long does a wet room take to install?
Allow around two to three weeks, as the floor has to be built up or lowered, fully waterproofed and given time to cure.

What's the fastest way to renovate a bathroom?
Keep the existing layout, choose products that are in stock and consider wall panels instead of tiles.
